Stars: Humphrey Bogart, Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre, Judith Anderson, Phil Silvers, Jackie Gleason. "Bogart's gang tracks down Fifth Columnists (Veidt, Lorre, Anderson) in WW2 N. Y. C. Interesting blend of spy, gangster, and comedy genres, with memorable double-talk and action scenes." (Leonard Maltin)

Amadeus (1984) (VHS)

The film features Peter Lorre, Conrad Veidt, Paul Henreid, and other exiled actors from German Europe. - The DVD version of 'Casablanca' includes theatrical trailers, a related documentary, optional French soundtrack, and optional English and French subtitles. Dark Journey (1937) (VHS)
Starring Vivien Leigh and Conrad Veidt. Leigh is a British double agent living in Stockholm who delivers doctored Allied information to German intelligence in Paris, only to fall in love with a suave baron (Veidt) who heads up the German intelligence-gathering efforts. Directed by Victor Saville.

Double Indemnity (1944) (DVD)
This classic film noir by director Billy Wilder features Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson. Femme fatale Stanwyck suckers shady insurance agent MacMurray into murdering her husband to cash in on the double indemnity policy on his life. Of course, the whole scheme starts to fall apart, making this one of the best noirs ever made. More about this DVD disc from Amazon.com.

A Foreign Affair (1948) (VHS)
Starring: Jean Arthur, Marlene Dietrich, and John Lund. Set in post-war Berlin, this is a classic Billy Wilder comedy. Staid middle America (Arthur) battles sophisticated Europe (Dietrich) in the rubble of Berlin's American Zone.

Judgment at Nuremburg (1961) (VHS)
Starring: Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Marlene Dietrich, Maximilian Schell. Critic Leonard Maltin: "Superior production revolving around US judge Tracy presiding over German war-criminal trials. Schell won Oscar as defense attorney, as did Abby Mann for his screenplay. Fine performances by Dietrich as widow of German officer, [Judy] Garland as hausfrau, Clift as unbalanced victim of Nazi atrocities." Directed by Stanley Kramer.

Gone With the Wind (1939) (VHS, DVD)
Starring: Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard. The Germanic connection is the memorable music by the Austrian composer Max Steiner in this film classic produced by David O. Selznick. - The DVD version of this film.

Hangmen Also Die! (1942) (VHS)
Starring: Brian Donlevy, Walter Brennan, Gene Lockhart. Amazon.com commentary: "This grimly atmospheric noir thriller, a vehement commentary on Nazi terror, conflict, and betrayal, focuses on a gunman hiding out with the Resistance in Prague after the 1942 assassination of Hitler henchman Reinhard Heydrich." Directed by Fritz Lang.

Starring: Greta Garbo. A classic Lubitsch comedy with a script by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett.

The Shop Around the Corner (1940) (VHS)
Starring: James Stewart, Joseph Schildkraut, Margaret Sullavan. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947). Leonard Maltin calls this film "the ultimate in sheer charm, a graceful period comedy..."
